Hope Cottage
With its beautiful, sloping thatched roof, Hope Cottage is one of two adjoining cottages that formed what was known as the Rolle Arms, an old medieval inn. Listed by English Heritage in 1967, it is believed that some of the early features and the roof structure may date back to medieval times. The Tap Room which is now the laundry and boot room has curved walls where the oak beer barrels were once stored. Beamed ceilings, exposed stonework, and a large fireplace showcase this traditional cottage and offers a peaceful retreat at any time of year. Hope is located in the village of Chittlehampton and is only a short walk from the village square, award-winning pub, The Bell Inn, Chittlehampton Village Shop, Post Office & Tea Room. For a 16th-century cottage, there is no need to worry about low ceilings; we recently had a visitor who was over six feet tall and they had plenty of headroom!
As you enter the cottage through a shared hallway, the front door opens in to a spacious lounge-dining room.
Dining Area: a large, welcoming area to sit and eat together and still enjoy the heat from the feature fireplace with its log-burning stove. There is a bookshelf here with a variety of reading material including books for the younger guests.
Lounge: curl up on our comfy sofas, with plush throws, wood burner and fire gaze, or stream your favourite programmes using our Google Chromecast. In the blanket box under the window you will find a selection of board games and some mindful colouring books.
We provide you with a full box of logs (and one refill during the winter months) along with kindling & eco firelighters. You can purchase additional bags of logs from most local supermarkets & petrol stations. It is important that you read and follow the fire lighting guidelines
Kitchen: through the rustic oak door, you will find the kitchen with its old brick floor and two large antique dressers. One where you will find everything you need for your stay: wine, champagne, gin glasses & tumblers; plenty of cutlery, bowls, plates, stovetop espresso pots. A range cooker, with double oven, separate microwave and fridge freezer. You will also will find, tea, coffee, sugar, foil, and sandwich bags. Additionally, you will find in the cupboard under the Belfast sink all the cleaning materials for your stay.
Tap Room and WC: Steps lead up to the rear lobby, WC and the Tap Room which forms the utility room and boot room, the perfect place to kick off your walking boots after a day exploring. Here you will find the washer/dryer and a dishwasher. There is also a wardrobe with cleaning equipment - upright hoover, Henry style vac and brooms/mops and buckets etc. We provide you with dishwasher tabs, washing machine liquid (the washing machine is liquid only) and softener. The Tap room is warm with the boiler and radiator and we provide a clothes airer for drying waders, surf suits and wet coats.
Bedrooms: after a long day, head up the wooden open-tread staircase to the first floor where you will find, a large landing area and three bedrooms (one with king-size bed, then a twin, and lastly a single). The rooms are furnished with Victorian-style beds, super soft throws, and plenty of storage space. Each room is themed around some of our carefully chosen artwork: the single is the seaside room inspired by local beaches and the village of Clovelly, the twin with our ladies of the South of France by artist Roy Woodard and the master bedroom features warm colours from the art of August Macke. In each room, you will find a chest of drawers, a wardrobe, mirrors, and a hair dryer. For our guests' convenience most rooms have a twin USB socket for charging mobile phones as well as main lighting and softer bedside lamps.
Bathroom: some might say the star of Hope Cottage. With its lovely slipper bath, you can soak away the day in peace and quiet; and with a downstairs cloakroom, there's no rush or interruptions. There is also a good sized enclosed Mira shower cubicle. We supply you with one set of towels per guest and a bath mat for your stay.
The Courtyard: leaving the cottage by the back door and turn right, within ten feet you will find a door (with a slate 'Hope' sign) that leads to the courtyard. The perfect place to relax over a coffee or glass wine and soak up the sun. If you continue up the path towards Lea Cottage and turn right, a little further you will find a pathway on the left to our away garden.
The Away Garden: again leaving the cottage by the back door and turning right, head up the lane and turn right at Lea Cottage, walk past the white house and then you will find a small stone lean-to with a path that leads up to the garden. The middle portion of the the garden belongs to Hope and you can sit up here and enjoy the views across the valley and watch the sun set. Here you will find a table & chairs, along with a BBQ for warmer months.
Dogs: We welcome one well-behaved small/medium-sized dog, but no dogs under one year old and no other pets. For the health of our guests, we ask that you do not allow dogs upstairs or on the furniture. Please note that we have no adjoining garden so you will need to take your dog out for regular breaks! You can walk up towards the cricket green, which can be accessed by turning right out of the back door and following the path straight up. You will also find "doggy bins", so please ensure you clean up after your dog as lots of people use this area. Poo bags can be found in the dresser drawer in the kitchen.
We ask that your dog is not left alone in the cottage.
